Dump Floor Characterisation

The Challenge

A mining area at coal mine designated for dragline waste rock dump was having issues maintaining stability due to the load of the spoil placed on variable floor conditions.

Evaluating every slope in the strip was time consuming and may not be indicative of the stability constraints of the area.

Our Approach

Encompass Mining utilized down hole geophysical scan data in the form of gamma, sonic, density and caliper together with floor dip to characterize the immediate floor.

This allowed us to create a domain map for the area and highlight areas of high risk dump foundation.

The Result

High risk areas of potential instability were highlighted in advance of dump development allowing the mining engineer to adjust the design or modify the schedule to allow floor treatment.  This proactive approach allows equipment to be scheduled in advance rather than being reactionary to remediate areas of instability.
